"We are looking for a sheep with 5 legs and a golden coat"
Do you sometimes read job ads that really appeal to you at first, but whose courage sinks in after reading the quantity of job and competence requirements?
A lot of competencies are required
Sometimes a bizarre number of competencies are required. Usually an average of 5 is mentioned in a job ad, more or less is possible, but 20 is a lot! In that case I advise you to call the vacancy holder and ask him/her which competencies are the 5 most important at this moment. Does it turn out that these are not the competencies in which you are strong? Then ask yourself if you are suitable for the position. I would not like a job where I already know that I have to tiptoe around the job; it does not seem like a sustainable match to me in any case.
Reason for panic?
Discouraged, even though you are excited about the job description? Whatever the reason for all these requirements, don't get discouraged immediately and read the job requirements and vacancy text again, calmly, and ask yourself the following questions:
First Aid for Sheep-with-5-legs vacancy
Below I outline situations that I regularly encounter and explain the probable cause, followed by tips on how to "turn the situation around"!
There are employers who -at least until recently- can get enough candidates and can afford to have overqualified requirements for the job. There is an advantage to this for the employer; the employee is quickly settled in, produces the desired services/production smoothly, and by the time the stretch is out of the job, they simply recruit again.
What can you do?
Realize that you will not be doing this job for years: there comes a limit to the challenge you get out of it plus the salary that is offered. These kinds of positions are often interesting for starters on the job market, young dogs who would like to put this position or organization on their CV and for the time being settle for a lower salary.
There are job seekers who have not yet decided on the content of a new position. So they put everything for convenience in the vacancy text. During the recruitment & selection process the job will take further shape based on the supply of candidates.
What can you do?
This is a tricky one: after all, you don't know what exactly they are looking for. But if they have a good feeling about a candidate, they will be more inclined to fill the position based on that candidate's profile. So react, if the organization and position appeals to you and wait and see if your CV and letter appeal enough to be invited for an interview.
It sometimes happens that the vacancy text was created without the intervention of the recruiter or HR adviser and lacks a reality check.
What can you do?
Often the requirements are adjusted later if there are insufficiently targeted and/or qualitative reactions: you then see the vacancy pop up again on social media, in an adjusted form. That is the moment at which you react or react again, if you were rejected earlier (in that case I would call in advance to see if it makes sense, now that you see that the function / job requirements are adjusted).
Moral of the story
Don't get discouraged right away, read the text again, ask for the job requirements further over the phone. Are you still enthusiastic? Then just respond!
